Overview
The Tax Officer is responsible for ensuring Busha meets all local and international tax obligations accurately and on time. This role supports compliance, advises on tax-efficient structures, manages filings, and works closely with Finance, Legal, and Operations to maintain a strong financial governance posture.
You’ll help Busha stay compliant as we grow across Nigeria, Africa, and other markets, ensuring zero penalties, clean audits, and smart tax planning.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Filing
- Prepare and file all statutory tax returns (PAYE, VAT, WHT, CIT).
- Ensure timely remittance of all tax obligations in line with Nigerian regulations.
- Track all filing deadlines and maintain a compliance calendar.
- Reconcile tax accounts monthly and resolve discrepancies promptly.
Tax Planning & Advisory
- Provide guidance on tax implications for business transactions, new products, and cross-border operations.
- Analyze regulatory changes and advise management on impact and required actions.
- Recommend tax-efficient structures for business operations and new initiatives.
Audit & Regulatory Management
- Serve as the primary contact for FIRS, LIRS, and other regulatory bodies.
- Coordinate and support tax audits, inquiries, or investigations.
- Prepare documentation, evidence, and reports required by regulators.
- Ensure Busha maintains clean, penalty-free tax records.
Internal Controls & Documentation
- Maintain accurate tax records, certificates, and documentation.
- Strengthen internal controls around tax calculations, approvals, and reporting.
- Develop or update tax SOPs in alignment with internal ISMS and audit standards.
- Keep organized digital and physical tax files for audit readiness.
Cross-Functional Support
- Partner with HR on PAYE and employee-related tax matters.
- Support Procurement and Operations with WHT and vendor tax compliance.
- Work with the Finance team on monthly closing, accruals, and tax provisions.
- Provide tax insights for budgeting and financial planning.
Must Have
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field.
- Minimum 4years’ experience in tax, finance, or regulatory compliance (preferably in fintech, financial services, or a tech startup).
- Professional certification (CITN, ICAN, ACCA) is an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian tax laws and regulatory frameworks (FIRS, LIRS).
- Experience with tax filings, remittances, audits, and reconciliations.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Excel.
- Understanding of fintech taxation, crypto taxation, or cross-border tax is a plus.
