Bluesky’s mission is to transition the social web from platforms to protocols. We’re building a federated social network where users have more power. Our team has decades of combined experience building distributed applications. As an engineer on the network services team, you’ll work on software that makes the open network behind Bluesky tick.
Working on Bluesky’s hosting and identity systems, you’ll be operating and maintaining core network infrastructure relied upon not only by Bluesky users, but also by a burgeoning ecosystem of thousands of developers. This comes at a time as we rapidly scale from tens to hundreds of millions of users. For those already familiar with the AT Protocol network, this role spans the PDS, Relay, auth & identity services, and developer SDKs.
Responsibilities:
- Operate production hosting and identity services.
- Maintain our open source SDKs and service distributions.
- Make changes to web UIs supporting auth, identity management, and developer documentation.
- Offer valuable input into the protocol development process.
You might be a good fit if you:
- Have a speciality in TypeScript or Go, with willingness to work in both languages.
- Enjoy working on backend web services; strong familiarity with HTTP, WebSockets.
- Are familiar with various auth technologies of the web such as OAuth, JWTs, public-key cryptography, and the web security model.
- Have experience working up and down the stack, with capability to contribute to web UIs.
- Have experience operating services used by tens of thousands to millions of users.
- Like working on small, fast-moving teams.
- Have read the AT Protocol docs and want to contribute.
We’re especially excited if you have:
- A strong understanding of the AT Protocol.
- Experience building open source developer ecosystems.
- Previous experience working on infrastructure for social apps at large scale.
We’re a fully remote team, though a significant overlap of working hours with US/Pacific is required. For full-time roles, we offer health, dental, and vision insurance.

Additional Notes:
- The anticipated base salary range for this position is $160,000 – 175,000 USD, excluding equity. Equity will be considered in the total compensation package. Final base salary for this role will be based on the individual’s geographic location, as well as experience level, skill set, training, licenses and certifications.
