The role in a nutshell:
We’re looking for an exceptional senior in house counsel to join our busy Legal team as Senior Legal Counsel, with particular experience in commercial and corporate law. You will be based at Luno’s Cape Town office and be an integral part of an established Legal team that seeks to provide world-class service to our business globally. You will report to Paul, Global Head of Legal, who is also based in Cape Town.
You will provide clear, focused and pragmatic advice on a full spectrum of legal matters impacting a rapidly growing and truly global business in a pioneering industry.
Your mission will be:
- Providing timely and proactive commercial advice to the executive team and internal business stakeholders.
- Advising on, and working with teams to implement, a wide array of strategic commercial projects, including new products and business models.
- Complex contract drafting, negotiation and review for and with internal business stakeholders.
- Working with and managing external legal advisors, as required.
- Engaging with global regulators as required.
- Assisting in establishing and managing legal policies and procedures.
- Monitoring and keeping abreast of global policy and regulatory developments and informing the business of updates and changes.
- Playing a key role in raising internal awareness of key legal issues that affect our customers and our business.
- Assisting in resolving customer issues where necessary and ensuring our customers enjoy stellar service.
A little about you:
- 6-8 years (including articles) of post-qualification experience at a top-tier law firm or in-house role, specialising in commercial and corporate law.
- Strong academic credentials, with a law degree from a top law school or tertiary institution.
- Excellent communication skills, analytical rigour, and high attention to detail.
- A strong team player, with high EQ and a positive attitude.
- The ability to manage and deliver on multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Sound business judgement, and a pragmatic approach, producing top quality, concise and practical legal advice across a broad range of matters.
- Willingness and flexibility to learn and adapt in an exciting and evolving industry. Luno is a global company with key markets beyond South Africa. If your career focus is only on South African law, then this is not the role for you.
- The ability to think critically and creatively to solve complex problems, while protecting Luno from unacceptable risk.
- The ability to work across teams, functions and geographies, with high autonomy.
- A valid work permit for South Africa, if you’re not a South African citizen.
- Basic knowledge of and passion for crypto currencies (advantageous).
In the first six months you will:
- Develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders in the business across all jurisdictions where Luno operates.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter relevant to your role.
- Become an integral member of Luno’s Legal team, demonstrating critical judgement and an ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
