Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

Coinbase is looking for a full-time Risk Management Specialist to join the Protective Intelligence team and support the Security Org’s key objectives. The Specialist role will give you exposure to how we process intelligence, assess and manage risk, evaluate global geopolitical and security developments, conduct due diligence, and carry out threat investigations.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Collect and analyze open-source information to produce intelligence for (1) Risk models at the strategic (e.g. for global expansion), operational (e.g. on site locations), and tactical levels (e.g. for travel and events) within a specific country, region, or city, providing inputs to assess environmental hazards, terrorism, crime, instability, etc; (2) Reports for internal stakeholders on geopolitical developments of relevance to Coinbase; and (3) Vulnerability assessments on high-value targets.
  • Combine structured techniques with internal and institutional knowledge to (1) Evaluate the probability of certain scenarios occurring and their potential impacts on the business, and (2) Recommend controls to mitigate said impacts, and track implementation to ensure their effectiveness, including but not limited to virtual and onsite control evaluation.
  • Conduct preliminary research for threat investigations and reputational due diligence projects in support of mergers and acquisitions, including via social media, open- and closed-source databases, and powerful investigative tools.

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • A well-organized team player who is able to constantly learn and work with basic direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle highly sensitive information.
  • Effective interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and communication prowess.
  • B.A./B.S. degree or higher.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in global security, due diligence, investigations, research, journalism or a related field.
  • Professional fluency in English.
  • Ability to “put yourself in the stakeholder’s shoes” to distill relevance from collected information and articulate why it matters for Coinbase
  • Critical thinking skills, especially applied to identifying and filling information gaps

Nice to haves:

  • Relevant experience in security, backgrounds, investigations, risk management, or the public sector.
  • Advanced degree, bonus if it’s in International Affairs, Economics, Political Science, Business or a similar area of study.
  • Professional proficiency in a foreign language.
  • Awareness of current events on a global scale.
  • Experience researching public records, including media and litigation databases and online research tools (e.g. Westlaw, LexisNexis, Pacer, Factiva, CLEAR, TLO, Wayback Machine, etc).
