The Role

Paradigm is a San Francisco-based investment firm focused on crypto and frontier technologies across the globe, with over $11 billion in assets under management. We make investments in companies and protocols at all stages, ranging from early-stage venture financing rounds to growth equity to liquid token assets.

Paradigm was co-founded in 2018 by Matt Huang (former Partner at Sequoia Capital) and Fred Ehrsam (co-founder of Coinbase). Since then we’ve been hard at work building a world-class team of brilliant mutants to investigate the world’s most beautiful technical problems. Our research-driven approach helps us build relationships with founders and entrepreneurs, but it also reflects our broader goal of growing the crypto ecosystem globally and accelerating crypto’s ability to advance the world we live in. We believe that crypto will ultimately redefine money, finance, and the internet itself, and this technological revolution will have a fundamental and long-lasting impact on the global economy.

We’re hiring a Government Affairs Lead to expand our Policy team. This person will report to Paradigm’s VP of Regulatory Affairs, Justin Slaughter.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage Paradigm’s suite of comments to regulatory agencies on all key rulemakings and requests for comment, including at the SEC, CFTC, prudential regulators, and FCC.

  • Monitor key regulatory developments in the U.S. relevant to crypto and other nascent technologies and advise firm on the same.

  • Develop and execute on novel regulatory approaches that further the mission and goals of crypto, from white papers to slide decks.

  • Assist with Paradigm’s filing of amicus briefs in federal and state-level litigation relevant to crypto.

  • Partner closely with legal and investment/research on cross-functional initiatives.

  • Advise and guide portfolio company founders and Paradigm’s investment and research teams on critical policy issues.

Qualifications and attributes

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a fast thinker, extremely strong writer, and crisp communicator.

  • Be humble, thoughtful, and subscribe to a growth mindset.

  • Be a voracious reader of legal and regulatory analyses, from matters relevant to securities and commodities regulation to topics around reducing unhelpful regulatory barriers to growth.

  • Have a demonstrated record of a strong, effective litigator or regulatory counsel.

  • Be flexible, agile, and able to navigate a constantly changing environment.

  • Have a track record of learning new subject areas quickly.

  • Have a strong moral compass and impeccable ethics.

  • Be an energetic, creative, self-starter with a bias for action and forward momentum.

  • Believe in crypto’s potential as one of the defining technological advances of our time.

The most successful candidates will have:

  • 5+ years of litigation or white-collar corporate work, whether in a large law firm or in-house in a litigation department, including on matters related to AML and sanctions.

  • Deep experience in financial services or technology policy, with an emphasis on crypto/securities/commodities regulation, its adjacent technologies, and/or the challenges facing high-growth startups in Washington, DC.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial or technology policy topics into easy-to-understand framing for policymakers and other key Washington, DC stakeholders.

  • Deep understanding of the various trade-offs between different regulatory approaches, including regarding centralization, security, privacy, and democratization, and a vision on how to support the best possible regulatory regime for crypto.

  • Onchain experience using crypto applications, including but not limited to DeFi.
