Background
Numerai is the hardest data science tournament in the world, powering an AI hedge fund. Every week we distribute and process terabytes of data, ingest millions of stock market predictions, execute thousands of Machine Learning models, and pay a global community of data scientists with our cryptocurrency Numeraire (NMR). We are looking for a driven full-stack growth engineer to join a small team responsible for developing, deploying, and maintaining web applications and APIs to support the Numerai tournaments and community.

Location: San Francisco, In-Office required

Compensation:

The Role
As a full-stack growth engineer you will bridge the gap between marketers and software engineers to build, deploy, and maintain services to grow the Numerai data science tournaments and community. You will focus on the public facing website and related backend APIs that drive marketing campaigns, growth initiatives, user onboarding and engagement, and much more. You will manage our community and communicate directly with data scientists and scientific researchers to build in deeply valuable tools into our website and APIs. You will also help manage our Ethereum ERC20 token treasury and may work on integrating with our decentralized web3 contracts.

Our tournament team covers a broad range of responsibilities, including:

  • Developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining our website and APIs
  • Helping with marketing and growth initiatives
  • Managing public relations, community outreach, our Discord server, etc.
  • Being on-call to support the running of our backend services

Some projects in the next 6 months could include:

  • Deeper integrations with ad campaigns, affiliate link programs, geurilla marketing techniques, and other targeted growth initiatives
  • Improving our user experience with more onboarding, better notification strategies, more table filtering and data visualization, and building out UX integration tests
  • Increasing engagement by introducing unlockable badges, account cosmetics, chat rooms, and more

You’ll be one of three engineers on this team; you will be expected to quickly take ownership of projects and become a driving force for growth of our tournaments and community. You should be comfortable managing your time to ensure both quick development and high quality output. All engineers at Numerai support the team through on-call rotations.

Who are you?
At a minimum you fulfill the following requirements:

  • You have worked in a commercial software environment for 6+ years alongside marketers, software engineers, and research scientists.
  • You deeply understand growth engineering and are familiar with ad campaigns and growth initiatives, website and UX design, public relations, community building, API development, and database management.
  • You know how to communicate with data scientists and/or scientific researchers.
  • You see technology as a means to solve important problems and believe exciting businesses are built on boring technologies doing sophisticated things.

Bonus
Any of the following would be considered additionally valuable:

  • You are familiar with Numerai, its complexities, and its vision
  • Basic understanding of statistical concepts and ability to build data visualizations
  • Experience with the python programming language, the pandas package, and the structure of data pipelines
  • Experience with Terraform, building cloud infrastructure, and CI / CD workflows

Our tech stack
In order of importance, you should have experience with the following technologies:

  • Our front-end is written in Vue 3 served by a nodejs server
  • Our API is written in Elixir and connects to a PostgreSQL database
  • Our cryptocurrency NMR is an ERC-20 token. We have smart contracts written in solidity that can handle basic tournament operations.
  • Our backend services and processes are written in Python (using well-known libraries like Pandas, Numpy, boto3, and sqlalchemy/psycopg2)
  • Our infrastructure sits in AWS, managed by Terraform, orchestrated by Airflow, ECS, and ElasticBeanstalk backed by all the usual services like EC2, S3, RDS, and Lambda.
