About the team:

The Anti-Financial Crime Analytics team has a mission to create, trigger, report on and innovate robust controls to combat AML, CTF, CPF, sanctions and traditional and unconventional forms of fraud.

We ensure the operational efficiency of our Anti-Financial Crime teams with the assistance of various technologies.

We provide our customers with a seamless fraud prevention experience by implementing and optimising dynamic and strategic forms of friction.

The role in a nutshell:

You’ll be responsible for managing the Anti-Financial Crime (AFC) Analytics Team, within the bigger Anti-Financial Crime team based in South Africa, and you will report to the Head of Anti-Financial Crime.

The role is split into three key spheres:

Supporting our AML Operations, Anti-Fraud, Market Surveillance and Compliance Advisory teams is a critical part of the role. You’ll be expected to understand respective environments and identify problem statements that require interventions to safeguard Luno and its customers.

Your mandate further includes driving key strategic initiatives and forms of innovation that need to be pioneered, developed and facilitated by you, in order to deliver global leading forms of Anti-Financial Crime innovation and cutting edge technology that will be utilised by Luno and its Anti-Financial Crime team.

You will be a key role player in managing the Anti-Financial Crime team strategy and its roadmap with our Product, Data and Engineering teams. Your objective is to maintain and improve the Anti-Financial Crime environment, to not only safeguards Luno but identifies risks associated with AML, CTF, CPF, traditional and unconventional forms of fraud with the use of data.

You’ll have the opportunity to lead a world class Anti-Financial Crime Analytics team that seeks your insights and guidance to ensure that Luno is at the forefront of Anti-Financial Crime capabilities.

Your mission will be:

You will be responsible for the management and oversight of the AFC Analytics Team on all functional and people management aspects, including:

  • Managing and overseeing all aspects of the functional area and the outcomes thereof, including the remediation of audit findings and governance associated with the operations of the area.
  • Management and oversight of the reports compiled by and submitted by the functional team
  • Supporting the Head of Anti-Financial Crime Operations in the planning and oversight of day to day team tasks as it relates to the functional area
  • Supporting Luno’s compliance efforts across multiple geographies
  • Supporting the business with function specific queries and business requirements, including triaging received queries and resolution of questions pertaining to Luno’s compliance procedures
  • Oversight of all operational processes within the functional area, including the identification of areas of improvement / deficiencies pertaining the the operational efficiency of processes and the continuous improvement thereof
  • Coordination and management of senior management approvals
  • Taking ownership and accountability for systems within the functional area, including the relationships with the vendors and escalating areas of concerns as and when needed
  • Monitoring the performance of team members and the quality of work performed by the team
  • Managing the usage of a variety of systems and software to ensure the most efficient use for the benefit of AFC efforts across all functions as follows:
  • Looker, Google sheet macros, pivot tables and raw data, Jira, Notion, Miro, Balsamiq, Databricks, MySQL
  • Ability to learn about and manage implementation of other tech stack that aids Anti-Financial Crime including AFC tools such as ComplyAdvantage, Chainalysis, Sift, Solidus, WorldCheck, Notabene and Geocomply.
  • Ability to assess buy or build for AFC initiatives including in relation to pro-active monitoring tools across all areas
  • Formulates and delivers impactful initiatives that move the function forward and aligns to the broader AFC roadmap and Goals
  • Ensures that decisions align with company and department strategic objectives to avoid wasted effort
  • Conducts cost / benefit analysis to ensure that all tasks/projects will have a positive impact and make commercial sense

A little about you:

  • University degree from a recognised tertiary institution
  • A minimum of 8 years work experience in an Anti-Financial Crime related field
  • Minimum of 3 year experience managing managing a high-performance team
  • Strong analytical mindset
  • Ability to adapt within a fast-paced environment
  • Accreditation within Product, Business Analysis or Project Management
  • Accreditation within MySQL or an equivalent
  • Achieves an accreditation within another space within Anti-Financial Crime
  • Strong attention to detail and experience in rule assessment and reporting, including documenting outcomes of reviews and investigations
  • High proficiency in English (please ensure that your application is in English)
  • If not a South African citizen, an existing, valid permit to work in South Africa
  • Entrepreneurial, strong sense of responsibility and very high level of integrity
  • Solid interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • Friendly, transparent, articulate and driven to succeed
  • Familiarity with crypto-currencies will be highly advantageous
  • Exposure to Jupiter Notes and Python will be beneficial
